VA Existing Building Code
This three day course is designed for those seeking to advance their understanding of the intent and application of the Virginia Existing Building Code (VEBC). Applicants should have basic knowledge of residential and commercial building codes, and must have completed the Core course. It is recommended that students complete the Commercial Plans Review course or have a basic understanding of building height and area limits prior to attending this class. Students will learn by participating in discussions, multimedia presentations, and simulations. Topics include: the purpose and intent of the Virginia Existing Building Code; accessibility; additions; alterations; historic buildings; change of occupancy; and relocated buildings. By the end of the course, students should be able to describe the purpose, intent, and scope of the VEBC; describe the benefits of the code; advise the design process of a rehabilitation project; and conduct plans review according to the VEBC. Students should bring copies of the current Virginia Existing Building Code and the Virginia Construction Code to class in order to support learning activities.
