This course is designed for all code enforcement individuals responsible for residential mechanical and fuel gas inspections including Combination Residential Inspectors. Students should have basic mechanical knowledge and must have previously attended the Academy’s CORE Course. The course will include sessions on:
- 2021 VRC (Virginia Residential Code) Chapter 1 overview with focus on mechanical inspections, including code modifications, exemptions from permit, minimum inspections, and permit and construction document requirements
- Mechanical appliance inspection including approval, location, clearances, condensate removal, and protection
- Combustion air requirements and calculations
- Energy Conservation (VRC Chapter 11) related requirements for mechanical systems including pipe and duct insulation, heating controls, mechanical ventilation, and duct sealing and testing
- Ventilation and exhaust air requirements
- Chimney and vent Inspections
- Residential Fuel Gas Inspection including piping inspection and pipe sizing, bonding, pressure testing, piping support and valve placement, and flow controls
Note: Previously, VBCA just offered one Mechanical Inspection module which covered both Residential and Commercial inspections. Beginning with the 2022 Spring Semester, Mechanical has been split into two modules going forward - Residential and Commercial. The previously offered Mechanical Inspection module will no longer be offered, but will still be accepted for DHCD Mechanical certifications until further notice
